Mercedes benefited from updates brought to the W17, even though the margin remains slim. McLaren and Lewis Hamilton are close behind, with Hamilton joining the fight. Russell also highlighted changes made to the car in preparation for the rain expected tomorrow. Weather conditions will be a crucial factor in the race, and it remains to be seen if team setup choices will pay off.
Russell’s thoughts following qualifying
Russell clinched pole position in Canada’s qualifying session at the last moment. Tomorrow, he will have the chance to defend against Antonelli and aim for his first victory since Australia. This result offers George some relief, breaking the current run of his teammate’s strong form.
“We made some changes and need to assess if they were the right direction. That final lap came out of nowhere. It’s an incredible feeling when, after such a tough session, you pull everything together on the last lap and jump up the standings: it’s epic,” he said after the session.
“We adjusted the car based on tomorrow’s forecast. For now, it might have cost us a bit. It unsettled the balance slightly. Kimi was more competitive than me and we didn’t have the same margin over others as yesterday, so it was challenging, but I reset my approach and put it all together,” he added.
