Amid numerous challenges faced by Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso, a former F1 driver has voiced strong criticisms.
This is certainly not the start to 2026 that Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin had hoped for. Expectations for Lawrence Stroll’s team were higher, especially given the significant investments made in recent years, including hiring Adrian Newey. The former Red Bull designer, who was also courted by Ferrari, has not had the impact everyone expected. This has been compounded by a problematic Honda engine.

Jolyon Palmer delivers harsh criticism to Alonso and Aston Martin
In recent weeks, the ‘green team’ has faced several criticisms. On the F1 Nation podcast, former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer spoke bluntly about the situation confronting Stroll and Alonso. “They were truly slow in Japan. It seems they are trying to fix their issues, but the adjustments appear only aimed at allowing the car to finish races. The situation is extremely serious; I believe this is one of the biggest failures in the history of the sport. Currently, they can finish a race only by drastically reducing power; otherwise, finishing the race is impossible for them,” Palmer explained.
“Looking at Fernando, it seems he has returned to his days as Renault’s third driver. He is working like a test driver because Aston Martin is essentially a workshop right now. Neither he nor Stroll are in a position to fight for any objectives, even though the fault lies with Honda,” the Brit added.
