Lando Norris qualifies third in Belgium but faces penalty, eyes recovery race

Lando Norris secures third place in Belgian GP qualifying but will have to fight back due to a grid penalty.

A rejuvenated McLaren saw Lando Norris deliver a bittersweet qualifying performance at the Belgian F1 GP. The British driver put in a strong weekend, but a penalty will push him ten places back on the starting grid tomorrow. Norris surpassed the allowed limit by replacing his fourth engine unit.

“We didn’t change anything to be fast here, but it’s nice to be in this position,” Norris said after qualifying. “Obviously, it’s not nice that I have to take a ten-place grid penalty tomorrow. Sadly, I won’t be able to fight these guys, which would have been great, but we’ve maximized this qualifying session. This track feels a bit like home for me, so I have extra motivation.”

Although partially satisfied with the qualifying result, Norris remains optimistic. “Hopefully, tomorrow will be fun,” he added.

Ready for a challenging comeback

When asked about his chances for a comeback, Norris replied, “The plan will definitely be to fight through the field. I’m not sure how far I can climb, but the car felt good.” He confirmed McLaren’s progress, saying, “I finished third today. This is a track where overtaking is possible. If there are plenty of chances, that would be fantastic. The race is long.”

Tomorrow promises a tight battle among the four top teams, including Ferrari, which is hoping to secure a top-three finish. The Belgian GP pole position went to Kimi Antonelli, who will start alongside Max Verstappen on the front row. Ferrari drivers will start from the third row, with Lewis Hamilton in fifth and Charles Leclerc in sixth.
