Alonso hints at big surprises after Aston Martin renewal, Le Mans return possible

Alonso, after renewing with Aston Martin, hints at possible big surprises: could the 24 Hours of Le Mans be on the horizon?

Fernando Alonso shows no signs of ending his long motorsport career despite his recent contract renewal with Aston Martin. The Asturian debuted in Formula 1 back in 2001 and, apart from brief stints outside F1 (such as from 2018 to 2021), he has remained a fixture in the top tier of four-wheel racing.

Alonso’s career has not been straightforward, plagued at times by ill-timed decisions that did not reflect his true potential. The two-time world champion, however, refuses to give up and continues to impress, driven by a hunger and fierce determination that have always defined him. His future still looks promising in both F1 and motorsport generally.

The secret behind Alonso’s longevity

Alonso discussed his future during Thursday’s media day in Sepang, speaking to outlets including F1inGenerale. He emphasized his passion for challenges: “I love challenges and, as I’ve said many times, my understanding of motorsport and life revolves around race cars. It has always been this way for me.”

He also highlighted adaptability as a key strength extending his career: “My advantage has been adapting to different cars and regulations. From V10s, V8s, to V6 engines; from Bridgestone, Michelin, to Pirelli tires. Also KERS, hybrid systems, ground effect and more. I have competed across categories: prototypes, IndyCar, Dakar. I try to use this strength to recreate feats that were possible in the past, maybe in the ’60s, ’80s, or ’90s. Today, I think few attempt such things. Max is the only one taking on GT racing challenges.”

Alonso then teased that surprises may still be coming: “I think about the challenges I’ve faced and those I will continue to face. Who knows, there might be other surprises in the coming weeks. Some things people consider impossible, but I want to find where the limits of possibility lie.”

Could Alonso be heading to the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

Speculation about Alonso’s future is growing, including the dynamic with Max Verstappen. The prospect of the two racing together seems plausible. At a press conference, Verstappen was even asked if Alonso’s upcoming announcement involved him and his sim racing team. “No, he won’t be driving for me,” Max said. “I don’t know what he means by that, but for me everything is clear.” He ruled out Alonso joining the Verstappen Sim Racing team.

So what could Alonso’s anticipated announcement be? The 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans is a logical guess. The event will not clash with any F1 weekends that year. It’s no secret Alonso wants to return after his wins in 2018 and 2019. While he hasn’t confirmed plans, the open slot in the F1 calendar leaves room for surprises and new endeavors.
