Ferrari has moved to calm tensions after Baku with a statement expressing full confidence in Vasseur: here is why.

Much ado about nothing: Ferrari wanted to put an end to the rumours surrounding Fred Vasseur following the events in Baku. There were many whispers suggesting the team principal’s position was at risk, but this weekend in Malaysia the matter was finally settled.

Support came not only from Maranello but also from both drivers, who expressed complete trust in Vasseur. Today at Sepang, where F1InGenerale was also present, the Frenchman clarified why Ferrari felt compelled to issue a public statement backing him.

“When you hear noise and all these rumours from the press throughout the week, I think as a team we just need to work in peace, and that wasn’t possible at all in this case,” he said at the press conference. “I believe the statement, whether mandatory or not, was necessary to do something. Otherwise, the same issue would have continued all week. Honestly, the biggest concern we have is maintaining stability and serenity inside the team. We need to focus and can’t do that if there are rumours all day long.”

James Vowles also publicly expressed his support for Vasseur, noting that while on-track rivalry is one thing, respect is quite another. He said: “Normally we challenge each other fiercely, sometimes even underhandedly, but Ferrari is in a better position now than it has been for a long time. They brought innovation to the car this year with that rear wing, which was impressive enough that everyone copied it. It’s a brilliant team. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing more to say about Fred, who is the right person to lead.”
