Ferrari experiments with SF-26 setup as Hamilton reveals Malaysia preparations

Ferrari tested special setup configurations with Hamilton during Malaysia Free Practice

Teams took to the track for the first day of activity at Sepang, nine years after Formula 1 last raced on this circuit. The track features low grip levels, and evolution will be crucial ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying session. Meanwhile, Ferrari worked with Hamilton on various setup options in Malaysia, searching for the optimal window for the SF-26.

Charles Leclerc ended the second free practice session in first place, 0.3 seconds ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz, who finished fifth. For Hamilton, the day was not straightforward and included an incident involving Bortoleto that attracted FIA attention.

Ferrari’s SF-26 testing program in Malaysia

After Friday’s session at Sepang, the British champion explained Ferrari’s program for the day. To manage tyre wear effectively, finding the right setup is essential, and Ferrari focused specifically on this with Hamilton.

“Throughout the sessions, we explored a couple of different setup directions. Now, the goal is to analyze the data and find the best compromise. We don’t seem too far behind the leaders, but we know there is still work to do to position the car better for tomorrow.”

The car provided valuable feedback on both qualifying pace and race rhythm. Given the high ambient and track temperatures, the issue of overheating the tyres should not recur during this event.

Challenges of the Sepang circuit

Several drivers struggled to find sufficient grip during qualifying simulations. Hamilton also faced difficulties in nailing the optimal lap, but conditions are expected to improve as the track gets more rubbered in over the weekend. However, rain remains a threat that could wash the track, negating grip progression.

The team must work on the car between Friday and Saturday, making positive gains during the third free practice session essential. Everyone faced challenges today, but starting tomorrow, performance differences will matter. “Overall, it was a tough day with very little grip available on track. Achieving the right balance was challenging, but this seemed to be a common issue for all,” Lewis added.
